CTI Inductive Medical Cleanroom Joysticks

  16/04/2018

For cleanroom and medical environments, CTI Electronics miniature medical joysticks are the most reliable and durable products available anywhere in the world.

CTI first announced its new line of parylene coated Medical Joysticks in 2015, designing them with the purpose of reducing the spread of infectious diseases.

The goal - a healthier and safer environment for medical staff and patients - was to be achieved by the creation of products that could withstand repeated hygienic cleaning, disinfection, or sterilisation.

Comprised of only three moving parts - the shaft, the spring-guide, and the spring - these components can be easily disinfected against infection and virus, and have an impermeable molecular barrier protection against bio-hazardous agents.

Because the parylene coating is applied as a gas, it penetrates spaces as narrow as 0.01mm, ensuring the very best thin film conformal coating. These medical joysticks can withstand vibration, shock, high EMI/RFI levels, humidity, fungus, and spray.

The CTI F-Series uses inductive coil sensor technology - meaning that the deterioration issues of other joystick technologies are avoided. They can be used in temperatures ranging from  -40˚C to +80˚C, and meet aerospace, medical & military standards.

Inductive sensors are a popular choice for measuring speed and position in the harshest of environments. The technology used in these was first observed by the scientist Michael Faraday in the 1830s - and his discoveries formed the basis of the modern electric motors and inductive sensors that we use today.

Their operation is unaffected by temperature, moving electrical contacts, humidity and outside contaminants - so when safety and reliability are crucial you will often find inductive sensors in constant use.

Previously a quite bulky technology, the development of modern printed circuit boards and digital electronics has allowed inductive coil sensor technology to enter an elegant new phase in recent years.

The Medical Joystick is designed for long-term durability, 10+ million cycles, 100,000+ hours, an expected 10+ year life of reliable service and worry free maintenance. “Drifting” is never a problem - the ratio of coil windings remains constant.  Neither is the wear associated with potentiometer joysticks or hall effect joysticks an issue. Single- or two-axis options are available, and the product can be customised to your use.

The joysticks are suited for medical environments including surgical theatres, intensive care units, Accident and Emergency units, and dentists. They can also be used in cleanroom environments such as pharmaceutical labs, and can be of help in food processing and aerospace manufacturing.

Selecting a cleanroom joystick requires a proper understanding of how the product will be used, and the environment within which it will sit. At Nexus Components we have the experience and knowledge to ensure you choose just the right configuration for your needs.

CTI Electronics Corporation is a leading U.S.A. manufacturer of robust industrial computer peripherals. Products range from keyboards, joysticks, trackballs, to switches used as operator input devices, mouse pointers, or motion control devices, designed to operate in extreme environments.
